There are several different velvet fabric types
Crushed velvet, like its name crushed velvet has a “crushed” look. And it is manufactured by twisting the fabric while wet or by pressing the pile in different directions. Due to this crushed velvet has patterned and shiny appearance, and the material has a unique texture.
Panne velvet. It is a type of crushed velvet for which heavy pressure is applied to the material to push the pile in one direction.
Embossed velvet. It is a printed fabric created by using heat stamp, which is used to apply pressure on velvet, pushing down the piles to create a pattern. The embossed section is lightly shorter than the surrounding velvet.
Plain velvet. It is usually like a cotton velvet. Plain velvet is heavy with very minor stretch and doesn’t have the shine. Plain velvet is made from silk or synthetic fibers.
Utrecht velvet. It is a crimped type velvet that has out of style now but it is still used in dresses and evening wear.
Pile-on-pile velvet. It has a piles of different lengths that creates a pattern. This type of Velvet mostly used in upholstery materials.
